WebOct 21, 2016 · Here we describe a second maxillate placoderm from the Xiaoxiang fauna (Figs. 1 and 2; figs. S1 to S7; and fig. S8, A and B), which illuminates the evolution of the dermal jaw (12–15), resolves the phylogenetic uncertainty around Entelognathus, and provides a comparative context for the bizarre facial morphology of the latter genus. The evolution of fish began about 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion. It was during this time that the early chordates developed the skull and the vertebral column, leading to the first craniates and vertebrates. The first fish lineages belong to the Agnatha, or jawless fish. Early examples include Haikouichthys.
