Zwischen 1927 und 1932 wurde mit Geldern der amerikanischen Rockefeller-Stiftung ein Neubau des seit 1902 bestehenden geophysikalisches Observatorium der Universität Leipzig auf dem Collmberg errichtet und 1932 eröffnet. 1935 wurde das Observatorium um eine seismographische Station erweitert.
